In response to continued growth, we are currently seeking a keen and ambitious Hosting Support Engineer to work in a helpdesk/customer support role for our web hosting division Goblin Hosting.

Goblin Hosting provides a full hosting service - Shared Hosting, Virtual Private Servers, Dedicated Servers, Domain Names and SSL Certificates, on Windows and Linux platforms.

As the Hosting Support Engineer you will be responsible for providing front line technical support and a high level of service to new and existing customers with their hosting requirements on Windows and Linux servers.

Your primary role will be resolving technical queries and problems, promptly and effectively, communicating via email, live chat and over the telephone. Support issues will range from the most basic to the more technically challenging with our VPS and dedicated servers. Any issues that cannot be resolved will be passed to our engineers at the data centre.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Performing daily checks on all servers to ensure they are running satisfactorily, up-to-date with patches, adequately secured against malicious attack and undertake any other maintenance tasks as required
  • Investigating alerts highlighted in monitoring systems
  • Liaising with data centre engineers as required

During quiet periods (hopefully none!) duties may also include:

  • Maintaining internal computer systems
  • Setting up new computers and systems as required

Due to the 24x7x365 operation of Goblin Hosting, the successful candidate will be required to work shifts, including nights and weekends. Nights and weekends however, if not required in the office, you will be able to work remotely from home, broadband and laptop will be provided. There will also be an on-call requirement (with an allowance in addition to the basic salary and benefits on offer).

Your experience

To be considered for this position excellent all round IT skills are required. In addition you must have strong experience of Windows Server 2003/2008 and Linux servers (Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian or Fedora).

The following skills are also essential:

  • A solid understanding of internet/networking concepts (TCP/IP, DHCP, HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, POP, SMTP)
  • Good knowledge of DNS/DNS Record types, resolution process and troubleshooting
  • Good knowledge of cPanel/WHM + Fantastico and Plesk control panels
  • Good knowledge of hardening internet facing Windows/Linux servers
  • Good knowledge of Apache and IIS
  • Good knowledge of MS SQL Server and MySQL
  • Good knowledge of firewalls and VPNs
  • Knowledgeable in the different types of domain names and SSL Certificates
  • Knowledge of mail server applications such as MailEnable, qmail and Sendmail
  • Knowledge of patching (OS and firmware)
  • Any exposure to VMware and virtualised environments would be a bonus
  • Any basic knowledge of scripting (PHP, ASP, .Net, Perl) would be a bonus

A driving licence would be helpful but is not essential.

This role will suit an individual who is committed to providing top quality technical support and able to troubleshoot in a thoughtful and efficient way, in some instances identifying problems with often limited information from the customer. As this is a customer facing role excellent communication skills are a must; you must be able to quickly inspire confidence in others and build rapport with the customer.

For the position of Hosting Support Engineer you must have a minimum of 2 years commercial experience in a technical customer service/technical support environment.
